U.S History 2007: Is America Ready?

U.S History 2007
Is America Ready?

U.S. Constitution, Article II, Section 1, Clause 4 President and Vice President;
Qualifications for President
No person except a natural-born citizen shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who has not attained the age of thirty-five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States.

Despite these rather simple requirements, no citizen of the U.S. has ever been elected President who was not white, male and a Christian.

In fact, no citizen of the U.S. has ever been nominated by a major political party in the United States for the office of President who was not white, male and a Christian.

In the upcoming presidential election, a white Christian woman, an African-American Christian male, and a white Mormon male are serious candidates for the Presidency. So, I ask you this question—

Is America ready to elect a President who is not a white, male Christian?
That is the question that you are to research and write about. You are free to choose whether to research the prospects for a woman, a non-white male, or a non-Christian. Ms. Forrester and I have provided you with a starting point for your research at http://politicaldiversity.blogspot.com/, but you will be on your own to further research the question, to evaluate the information you uncover, and to support your position on the question with persuasive evidence.

You will be expected to consider and evaluate historical information that may have a bearing on the likelihood of a woman, an African American male or a non-Christian being elected President of the United States in 2008.

Your assignment is to write a well-researched paper (1200 words maximum) which persuasively argues your position on the question. Your paper must include an opening paragraph with a clear thesis statement, a tightly written body in which you present evidence of your arguments in support of your thesis, and a conclusion.
I will provide a Grading Rubric for History Research Paper for your guidance.

You must use “parenthetical enclosures” for citations to all sources for evidence presented in the body of your paper. (See the “Parenthetical Enclosure” guidelines in the Saint Mark’s Citation Guide which I provided to you.) You need not have a parenthetical after each sentence. If a series of sentences (or an entire paragraph) are from one source, put a parenthetical at the end of that section of material.

You must attach a “Works Cited” page at the back of your paper. (See Saint Mark’s Citation Guide).

Plagiarism – Be very careful to avoid plagiarism. Refer to the discussion of plagiarism in the Saint Mark’s Citation Guide.

Due Dates:
Nov. 6– First Draft and outline of paper due. Your draft will be peer-graded in class.

Nov. 12- Second Draft of your paper is due. Turn it in to me for review and comment and a “draft” grade.

Dec. 3 – Final Paper due. Please turn in two (2) copies. I will keep one for
my files.
